Miyazaki began working on the screenplay in 1990 and with many of his works he always aimed for perfection, but Howl's Moving Castle was anything but perfect. The film's casting was one of the more challenging aspects of the project as Miyazaki used many of his regulars from the studio including Satoshi Kon, Yoshifumi KondÅ, Kunihiko Ikuhara, and Isao Takahata to try and secure the roles for Howl's Moving Castle and the other Ghibli films. Takahata was chosen to direct the film, but was forced to drop out due to the unavailability of Studio Ghibli's other animators.[24] Kunihiko Ikuhara was chosen as the artist for the film, but died before production began. The role was eventually given to Isao Takahata's son, Toshio Takahata. Takahata was selected after Hayao Miyazaki's main animator, Isao Takahata. Toshio Takahata was the only person who Miyazaki thought was suitable to direct the film. The lack of faith he had in Takahata was one of the reasons he took over the project. Takahata agreed, and was convinced to take on the director's role when he was told that Miyazaki would be going back to his home base in Mitaka, Tokyo for a full year. Takahata was very concerned about Miyazaki's health, as Hayao Miyazaki suffered from severe asthma as well as gastrointestinal problems. However, Miyazaki returned to the studio, and Takahata wrote the screenplay. John Lasseter, the director of Toy Story and A Bug's Life 827ec27edc
